According to the National Safety Council, there are more than 2.5 million rear end collisions reported every year in the United States, making them the most common type of automobile accident. Rear end collisions often happen when drivers are stopped at traffic lights or stopped in congested traffic, and are unable to avoid the accident because other cars surround them. In a rear end collision, the front bumper of the car in back collides with the back bumper of the car in front, thus transferring the energy from the rear car to the front car.
