Two Teens and Good Samaritan Killed in Horrific Miami DUI Accident

Miami teenagers, 17-year-old Anapaula Saldana and her fried Caroline Agreda, crashed their car with an SUV driver at SW 157th Ave. and 56th St. on Sunday, April 13th. While they were standing by their car, a passing motorist named Eduardo Hernandez stopped to help them and attend to the injured SUV driver until police arrived. The Good Samaritan was helping the girls when another car plowed into them–killing all three. Witnesses said that the driver of the car never even hit the brakes.

30-year-old Christopher Masferrer was arrested at the scene of the fatal Miami car accident and was reportedly drunk. He hit the two Senior High School students first, before hitting their car, and then Hernandez. Masferrer was taken to Kendall Regional Hospital to be treated for minor injuries, but was released by Sunday night.

Although police officials have not released a toxicology report, they do believe that speed and alcohol may be a factor in the crash. They will wait for the results before filing formal charges against the driver. Masferrer does have a record of unsafe driving and a history of traffic infractions. What is known, however, is that in one instance, three families were changed forever. For now, the entire Miami-Dade community is mourning the loss of these three individuals.

Every day in America, 28 people die because of drunk drivers. In 2012 alone, 10,322 died in accidents that could’ve been prevented if the driver had made the decision to call a cab. In 2011, 1.2 million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. Across the country, someone is injured every 90 minutes because of a drunk driver.

While these statistics may be sobering, the sad fact is that drunk drivers who kill or injure people are often repeat offenders. In fact, the average drunk driver has driven drunk 80 times before his or her first arrest.

If you or someone you love has been injured or killed because of a drunk driver, it is important to know that the law is on your side. You may be able to file a wrongful death claim against the driver who killed your loved one and recoup damages for the lives they have destroyed. While no amount of compensation could ever replace the loss of a loved one, a wrongful death claim can help you and your family avoid financial strains as you cope with rebuilding your life.
