New Florida Hit and Run Bill Approved

A new hit and run bill has been passed in the state of Florida. This bill addresses the dangerous hit and run accidents that have increased in the State of Florida in recent years. According to the bill, if a person leaves the scene of an accident, and a death occurs, they will be forced to serve a 4-year mandatory sentence. This bill, named after 36-year-old bicyclist, Aaron Cohen, who was killed in 2012 because of a hit and run accident, received unanimous votes, 118-0. Representative Irv Slosberg said, “This bill is definitely going to make Florida a better, safer place to live.”

Hit and run accidents are starting to become an “epidemic” sweeping through the majority of the nation. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, 11% of all traffic accidents involve at least one driver who has left the scene of the accident. Peter Kissinger, President and CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety states that approximately 60 percent of people who are killed in a hit and run accidents are pedestrians.

One of the main troubles with hit and run accidents are that victims are usually left hurt, sometimes severely, and in need of medical attention immediately. With no one there to help get them the medical attention needed, victims often lay for hours, in agonizing pain, before receiving help.

Injuries sustained in hit and run accidents can include:

Many times when a hit and run accident occurs there is an underlying issue and the driver flees the scene of the accident out of fear. Common reasons an individual may not stop after an accident are:

  • He/she has a warrant out for their arrest
  • He/she is driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • He/she is driving illegally
  • The driver is uninsured

If you have been involved in a hit and run accident, your next step should be to seek legal representation. When hiring legal council, you can expect an attorney to fight vigorously for compensation due to you. When recovering from injuries, medical bills, lost wages, and therapies can all become overwhelmingly high, not to mention, loss of quality of life and pain and suffering.
