For years, coaches, assistant coaches, and trainers in the NCAA would knowingly put a concussed player back into the game–simply for the sake of the win. On July 29, 2014, the NCAA agreed to settle a class action lawsuit with injured players and the terms of this settlement will change the NCAA forever–for good.
The class action lawsuit that was filed against the NCAA sought damages for numerous individuals who have been forever harmed by multiple concussions and the way coaches and trainers handled those concussions. In addition, the lawsuit sought to change the way future concussions were handled by the NCAA.
The terms of the settlement included several criteria:
- $70 million for screening athletes that are suspected to have a concussion or brain injury
- $5 million for traumatic brain injury and concussion research
- NO return to game in which a player has sustained a concussion
- Properly trained medical staff must be present at all contact sporting events
- Mandatory reporting of concussions and head injuries to the NCAA
- Education on concussions, their symptoms, and long-term consequences for all athletes in the NCAA
Permanent Consequences of Concussions
If treated quickly and properly, a concussion does not have to de-rail your entire life. If not taken care of or if multiple concussions are sustained, athletes run the risk of living with some severe and horrific lifelong symptoms, including:
- Parkinson type symptoms, such as shaking, tremors, and tics
- Memory loss
- Early onset of dementia
- Sleep disorders

- Deterioration of the bran or CTE
