Hit-And-Run Seriously Injures Pedestrian

You may have missed this story last month, but a 72-year-old man was arrested after a hit-and-run crash seriously injured a pedestrian in northwest Miami-Dade County.

The victim was a 54-year-old woman who was crossing the street at around 7 p.m. when she was struck by the man’s Toyota Tundra. She was taken to the hospital by ambulance where she is currently recovering from her injuries.

Police were able to locate the driver of the vehicle thanks to surveillance footage of the incident. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing serious injury.

We bring you this story to highlight one of the many dangers pedestrians face on the roadway as well as how vulnerable they are. Do you know what to do if you or a loved one are harmed in a pedestrian accident?

Florida Numbers

Florida is a tourist destination. Because of that, we tend to see a good many pedestrian accidents. We have drivers from all over the country crowding our streets. Many of them engage in negligent driver behavior.

For the latest reporting year, Florida saw over 9,000 pedestrian crashes. Out of those, there were 7,796 injuries and 667 fatalities. As you can see, most pedestrian crashes result in an injury or death.

Why is that the case?

Quite simply, pedestrians have no protections against a vehicle slamming into them. When they are hit, they are impacted twice – once with the vehicle and once with the ground. The resulting injuries can be devastating. We often see:

  • Spinal cord and head trauma
  • Major lacerations or amputations
  • Broken and dislocated bones
  • Internal organ damage

These injuries can become very costly, especially if long-term care is needed. Spinal cord injuries can cost over $1 million for the first year of care alone.

These accidents often happen because of driver negligence. Sometimes, drivers ignore pedestrian right-of-ways at crosswalks or intersections. Other times, they do not look before backing out of parking spaces.

We often find that drivers who hit pedestrians are distracted by their phones or other devices. Sending a text message is not more important than watching the road.

Drunk drivers continue to plague Florida roadways and they often strike pedestrians at high speeds.
